If Deion Sanders is able to flip the script in Boulder and win big right away after inheriting a 1-11 program and seeing over 70 players enter the transfer portal in the most significant roster overhaul college football has ever seen, there's a chance that some facing similar rebuilds will opt to copy his takeover strategy.
However, the fact remains that sending that many players packing, and making it clear from the jump with his now iconic Louis baggage quote, in not only unconventional, but it's also a strategy that has rubbed a lot of coaches the wrong way.
Earlier this off season Pat Narduzzi was publicly critical of Prime, blasting Sanders by sharing, "That's not the way it's meant to be. That's not what the rule intended to be. It was not to overhaul your roster. We'll see how it works out but that, to me, looks bad on college football coaches across the country"
Narduzzi isn't the only one speaking out about the roster overhaul strategy either.
Yesterday, at SEC Media Day while talking with KREF 94.7, Oklahoma's Brent Venables was also critical, noting that he gave the roster he inherited three areas they needed to excel to stay on the roster.
"You want to talk about a culture change, and the resetting of standards, and what the expectations are, I gave guys 12 months of grace. I wasn't Deion. I gave guys 12 months of grace to figure it out."
"Here's the three [things]; go to class, live right off the field, and when you show up here, you show up with respect and appreciation for your opportunity."
"If you go 0-for-3 for 12 months, you're going to need a fresh start, so we had 21 guys - give or take - find a new start," Venables ended by sharing, noting their 21 guys or so they had enter the transfer portal or leave the program.
It goes without saying here that the two rosters being talked about are not anywhere close to equal.
Venables took over a roster full of talent coming off a 10-3 season and finished 3rd in the final polls, and went 6-7 during his first season as a head coach.
Deion and his roster loaded with new faces courtesy of the portal will get their feet wet starting September 2nd when the Buffs play on the road at TCU, followed by a home games against Matt Rhule and Nebraska and in-state rival Colorado State to open the year.
Considering Prime had a strong rebuttal to Narduzzi's criticism, I'd expect him to field a question or two on the comments from Venables as well, and his response will surely be noteworthy.
Stay tuned to The Scoop for the latest.
Update >> Seems as if Prime has offered a comment a bit ago today.
Please read this slowly. I've Never responded to any of these Great coaches that choose to target me or our program here @CUBuffsFootball. I'm Great at walking & talking the talk & if it were truly me I would've referenced a LAMBORGHINI. That's #CoachPrime
