On the campus of NC State, there is an annual tradition known as the Krispy Kreme challenge.
The challenge is a run where participants start at the Memorial Bell Tower on campus and run for about 2.5 miles before they have to eat a dozen Krispy Kreme donuts and then turn around and run 2.5 miles back with a stomach full of donuts.
Why is that relevant? Well, before before the season started some comments were made on the ACC Network crew on The Huddle. The comments came in the form of a question centered around where the bigger number lies - members of the on-air crew that could finish that Krispy Kreme challenge, or the number of NC State wins in 2020?
For the record, there are four members of the show. Translation: They didn't have much faith in Dave Doeren and his staff's ability to eclipse four wins on the season.
However, with the season wrapped up the joke has landed firmly on the lap of the ACC Network crew, as NC State went 8-3 on the season. During a recent interview with The Huddle Doeren came armed with a dozen Krispy Kreme donuts to deliver a message.
At the end of the interview, Doeren took his shot.
"Wait a minute...I have some Krispy Kreme donuts for you guys since you said you could be in the Krispy Kreme challenge, and that's how many games we would win...and the lack of respect you showed our program. so I got you some donuts."
"Better luck next year," Doeren told the analysts. "I don't get mad, I just get even boys. Just remember that."
All the members of the on-air crew could muster were comments of "duly noted" and "okay, that is warranted."
All in good fun, and even if Doeren forfeits his right to say that he doesn't listen to what analysts on the network say now about his team, it's also kind of refreshing to hear a coach call stuff like this out.
