Defensive coordinator Jordan Lesley has been let go at West Virginia, Neal Brown has announced.
The move comes as the Mountaineers enter the bye week following a narrow win over Big 12 foe Arizona on Saturday.
In both the 2020 and 2021 seasons Lesley was a nominee for the Broyles Award, which goes to the top assistant coach in college football.
However, this year WVU is allowing over 28 points per game and rank 95th nationally in scoring defense.
They also rank 113th in passing yards allowed per game, and that was on full display against Arizona on Saturday as star Wildcat receiver Tetairoa McMillian went for over 200 yards on the day by himself.
Lesley followed Brown from Troy to Morgantown, where he started off coaching the defensive tackles after a successful defensive coordinator run at the Junior College level with stops at Kilgore, Northwest Mississippi and East Mississippi. He coached the defensive tackles at Troy before moving to defensive line.
When Brown took the job at WVU, Lesley came with as defensive line coach, and in 2020 was elevated to co-defensive coordinator before taking on the defensive play caller responsibilities in 2020.
Jeff Koonz, the team's special teams coordinator and inside linebackers coach is taking over as interim defensive coordinator for the remainder of the year.
The change is the second defensive coordinator of the week in college football, joining Ted Roof and UCF parting ways yesterday.
