The story lines were easy -- and convenient -- to mush together. Washington State wide receiver Kassidy Woods joined the Pac-12 Unity movement, Cougars head coach Nick Rolovich told Woods to clean out his locker, therefore Woods was kicked off the team for joining the unity movement.
Except that's not really how it went down, and we know that because we can read it all in the transcript.
Woods informed Rolovich he will skip the 2020 seasons out of concern for his health and safety due to COVID-19, especially because he lives with Sickle Cell trait. Rolovich told Woods he supported that decision, and that the university would honor his scholarship for the upcoming year. The point of conflict, if you want to call it that, came when Rolovich informed Woods he couldn't be around the team if he wasn't playing in games.
Woods went into the conversation believing he could eat, dress and workout with the team while not playing in games, but Rolovich informed him -- correctly -- that doesn't make sense for the team or for Woods himself.
On Monday night, Rolovich released the statement cleaning up the conversation -- a conversation Woods recorded and released without Rolovich's consent.
As the coach says, the conversation took place on Saturday, a day before the #WeAreUnited effort went public. Rolovich then states that the only Cougar not currently with the team is Woods because, again, he's voluntarily skipping this season out of concern for his health and safety, not because he tried to organize.
