Prairie View hits pause; showdown with Deion Sanders, Jackson State in jeopardy (Jackson State)

Prairie View A&M's football team might not get its opportunity to knock off rival Alabama A&M or attempt to make a statement against Deion Sanders' Jackson State program, either.

The Panthers, off to a promising 2-0 start already with wins against Texas Southern and Grambling, are pausing all football activities due to widespread COVID-19 issues and quarantine protocols within the Prairie View football program.

Slated to play Alabama A&M this weekend at home at Panther Stadium and set to visit Sanders' Jackson State program in Jackson, Mississippi, on March 28, the Panthers now are postponing both contests and no makeup dates have been announced.

The school revealed the shutdown in a late-afternoon release Tuesday.

Per the Texas-based school's release, Prairie View's decision to postpone indefinitely both contests follows the guidelines of the Southwest Athletic Conference as well as the league's COVID-19 Advisory Committee.

The Panthers have experienced a discernible uptick under third-year coach Eric Dooley, including a winning record in 2019 as well as the early undefeated start to this campaign.

Beyond the two games now indefinitely postponed, the Panthers are slated to host Southern University on April 10 and close the season on the road April 17 at Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
