2018 Changes
A number of changes have taken place in Ann Arbor since the Wolverines wrapped up their 8-5 season. Greg Frey, who coached the tackles and tight ends and had the run game coordinator title, left to become the offensive line coach for Willie Taggart at Florida State, and Harbaugh has brought in former Arkansas offensive coordinator Dan Enos under the title of "offensive assistant" for the time being, and Central Michigan tight ends coach / assistant head coach / recruiting coordinator Sherrone Moore to mentor the Wolverine tight ends. With the addition of Moore, Jay Harbaugh (who coached the tight ends the past few seasons) moves to running backs and will also serve as co-special teams coordinator.
On the defensive side of things, versatile former Cincinnati and Boston College assistant Al Washington, who coached both running backs and defensive line at Boston College, was brought on board as a defensive assistant coach. The staff lost safeties coach Brian Smith, who left to become the defensive coordinator at Rice, but landed a big win as linebackers coach / special teams coach Chris Partridge turned down opportunities elsewhere, including Alabama.
There has been plenty of public speculation in the media about changes on the offensive staff, including perhaps losing Pep Hamilton to an opportunity with an NFL organization. Enos' contract, which was signed over a month ago, covers that possibility by noting Enos will make $150,000 in his current role, and if he were to add a coordinator title, he'd receive a bump to $750,000.
The largest change in the off-the-field staff came with the dismissal of Kevin Tolbert, who had worked with Jim Harbaugh with both the Niners and at Stanford. Ben Herbert, who spent the past five seasons coordinating the strength efforts at Arkansas for Bret Bielema, was announced as Tolbert's replacement in early January.
Offensive analyst Scott Turner is leaving to coach quarterbacks for the Carolina Panthers.
Saturday January 20th update>
Source tells FootballScoop Jim Harbaugh has offered a position to Minnesota offensive line / run game coordinator Ed Warinner. Prior to joining PJ Fleck's staff, Warinner previously coached offensive line (and then served as offensive coordinator) at Ohio State 2012-16. Warinner previously has coached offensive line at Notre Dame, Kansas, Illinois, Air Force, Army, etc...
Tenth Assistant
Dan Enos is currently, effectively Michigan's 10th assistant.
