Vanderbilt entered today's game 1-5, with losses in their last two games at Ole Miss and vs UNLV by a combined total of 16-65. Needless to say the fans have been vocal about the team's performance and Derek Mason in general who is now in his sixth season at the helm at Vanderbilt and who has only 26 wins in total in six seasons.
James Franklin won 24 games in his three seasons at Vandy.
Following today's 21-14 win over a ranked Missouri squad that came into the game at 5-1, Derek Mason's emotions bubbled over during his on-field post game interview.
What transpired was one of those, well...interesting post game moments.
After the reporter asked Mason about fielding questions about his job security all week long, Mason first gave honor to God, then added:
"You know, it's been a rough patch. But I told my team this, and I want everyone to understand this. A lot of people want this job, or so they think, but I'm the man built for this job."
"Everyday man we grind. We grind. Don't question who we are, what we do, or how we play. We're Vanderbilt men."
Just a week ago, Vanderbilt got handled at home by UNLV. Today, they upset a top 25 team. Quite the swing of emotions for Mason and his guys.
Some coaches say that they're so dialed into the task at hand that they don't really hear the outside noise during the season, but Mason is definitely hearing some of that outside noise following their slow start.
