Matt Campbell was already the most locked-in coach in the country, thanks to his $9.4 million buyout.
Now Iowa State is rewarding Campbell for sticking around. Cyclones AD Jamie Pollard included all the relevant details in one tweet announcing the deal.
Campbell's new salary takes him from 53rd nationally to inside the top 30 among 2017 salaries, according to the USA Today database. He goes from being just above Rutgers's Chris Ash to right around the 2017 salaries earned by Minnesota's P.J. Fleck and LSU's Ed Orgeron. Iowa State's staff pay was $2.32 million in 2017, per USA Today, and will from sitting just below Rutgers to in the neighborhood of Kansas State and Virginia.
Campbell earned the deal after leading Iowa State to a 7-5 season that saw unprecedented victories over then-No. 3 Oklahoma and then-No. 4 TCU and rise to as high as No. 15 in the AP poll, the program's highest ranking since 2002.
He was also a candidate for the Nebraska job.
The question, of course, is what sort of buyout Campbell agreed to in return for accepting Iowa State's cash. Because we know Pollard actively worked to lock in Campbell with his first contract, and that was before Campbell beat two top four teams in the span of a month.
