Report: 88 percent of draft picks played multiple sports in high school (Featured)

On Friday we highlighted a study showing 30 of 32 NFL Draft first-round picks played more than just football in high school.

The entire Draft has now come and gone, and the numbers stayed about the same through all seven rounds: the vast majority of draft picks were multi-sport athletes in high school.

According to data compiled by Tracking Football, 222 of 253 overall selections were multi-sport athletes. Track was once again the most common second sport, representing 157 of those 222 selections. The next most common was basketball at 115 players. After a big drop, baseball was the third-most common second sport at 20, followed by wrestling (seven) and lacrosse (five). Soccer, volleyball, tennis, rugby, hockey and powerlifting split 10 players.

Overall, 53.4 percent of picks were 2-sport athletes, and 32.8 percent were 3-sport athletes.

On a positional basis, only offensive line (76 percent) and linebacker (77 percent) dipped below 80 percent participation in multiple sports.
