Sources: Willie Taggart emerging as strong candidate at Florida Atlantic (Featured)

Update: Taggart himself has now confirmed the hire to Pete Thamel.

Sources tell FootballScoop this morning that Willie Taggart has emerged as a strong candidate at Florida Atlantic.

It remains to be seen if Taggart will ultimately end up with the job as others continue to be in play as well, but from what we've been hearing this morning FAU considers Taggart a viable option, and Taggart wants the job.

Taggart was let go just under two years into his Florida State tenure just a few weeks ago. On his climb to that job however, he did an outstanding job putting Western Kentucky on the map after taking over one of the tougher jobs in major college football at the time. That rebuild helped him land the South Florida job, where he went 24-25 overall before using a 10-2 final season in 2016 to help him land the Oregon job. He spent one 7-5 season in Eugene before heading to Tallahassee.

Sources tell FootballScoop FAU's goal was to have a coach in place before this weekend.

The Owls' vacancy is viewed as one of the best in Group of 5, owing to an unparalleled location in terms of recruiting and quality of life, and a roster that won two Conference USA championships in three seasons under Lane Kiffin, including in 2019.
