Video: A D-III program takes a look back at their improbable run to the national title (MIAA)

Long before programs like Wisconsin-Whitewater and Mount Union were making annual appearances in the Division III national title game, the landscape of small college football was much different.

Mount Union was still a perennial power, but so programs like St. John's (MN) and Wittenberg (OH) and Washington and Jefferson (IA) were just as likely to win the vaunted Stagg Bowl. During the 1994 season, one program from Michigan burst onto the scene in the chase for the crown.

The history at Albion College is rich and includes 34 MIAA conference champions and one national championship. Heading into the 1994 season the Britons had won the last 5 straight MIAA titles, so while they were a longshot, they were far from unheard of.

In order to win their way to the Stagg Bowl, Albion would have to repeat as conference champs (for the sixth time in six seasons), and also beat defending national champion Mount Union, St. John's and Washington and Jefferson...all national powerhouses at the time.

The Britons knocked each one of those teams off and took home their first, and the conference's only Stagg Bowl to date. It was a special season for all involved without a doubt.

Now, players, students, and coaches will be able to relive the journey of that special season with a documentary that the school has released. This will undoubtedly serve as a great recruiting tool for the Britons as well, reminding recruits of the success that the program now run by Craig Rundle (in his 17th season) is capable of.

I highly recommend taking 13 minutes out of your day, or weekend, and enjoying this one.
