Minnesota is elevating defensive coordinator and interim head coach Tracy Claeys to the full-time head coaching position.

The football program sent this tweet this morning to announce the move, and added that he'll be signing a three-year deal.

Claeys will make $1.4 million next year, with $100,000 raises each of the next two seasons.

The move is a big one for the sake of continuity, as most of the staff has been together for decades under Jerry Kill, and the program has made huge strides under Kill and his staff leading up his resignation a few weeks ago. Claeys himself spent 21 years as an assistant under Kill.

In his two games as the interim head coach this season, Claeys has led the program admirably, losing in the final moments to Michigan, and then the Gophers gave top-ranked Ohio State all they could handle this past weekend.

Heading into this season, only one other interim head coach since 2008 coached their respective team in more than two games and earned a promotion to the full-time role. That coach was Clemson's Dabo Swinney, and it's working out pretty dang well for them.

As always, stay tuned to The Scoop for the latest.
