Jeff Brohm will be the new head coach at Purdue, sources told FootballScoop on Monday.
Brohm, of course, is the Western Kentucky head coach who just two days ago led the Hilltoppers to their second consecutive Conference USA championship. In his first head coaching job, the former NFL quarterback and longtime offensive assistant has led Western Kentucky to a 30-10 mark in three seasons on the job. WKU finished the 2015 campaign at 12-2 with a No. 24 final ranking in the AP poll, a landmark achievement for a program that didn't compete in FBS until 2009.
Brohm's expertise dovetails perfectly with past Purdue success -- dynamic offensive football, specifically through the passing game. The Boilers were the first Big Ten team to adopt a progressive passing attack under Joe Tiller and rode that basketball-on-grass approach to 10 bowl games in an 11-season stretch, including a trip to the Rose Bowl in the 2000 season -- the program's only trip to Pasadena since 1966.
A year ago, Brohm's Hilltoppers led the nation in passing efficiency, completing 50 touchdowns against nine interceptions while completing 71.9 percent of their passes for 9.4 yards per attempt. Following the graduation of multi-year starter Brandon Doughty, Western Kentucky plugged in South Florida transfer Mike White at quarterback and did not skip a beat. WKU ranks fifth in passing efficiency with 39 touchdowns against seven picks while throwing for 9.9 yards per attempt.
Brohm served as Western Kentucky's offensive coordinator during the 2013 season before his ascension to head coach when Bobby Petrino departed for Louisville. A Louisville native and former Cardinals quarterback, Brohm started his coaching career with the Louisville Fire before becoming his alma mater's quarterbacks coach and later offensive coordinator. A 7-year NFL quarterback, Brohm also has coaching experience at Florida Atlantic, Illinois and UAB.
At Purdue, Brohm will take over a program coming off a 3-9 season that has suffered through five consecutive losing seasons. The Boilers hired AD Mike Bobinski away from Georgia Tech in August and have committed $60 million to revamp their football facilities. With a location pitting them in between Chicago and Indianapolis and the fortune of sitting in the easier of the Big Ten's two divisions, the path for Brohm to completely transform Purdue football is there.
