On Jan. 2, 2014, Josh Heupel's Oklahoma offense gained 429 yards of total offense (348 passing), went 7-of-15 on third down, achieved 24 first downs and beat Alabama 45-31 in the Sugar Bowl. It was a clinic, and a sign of things to come for quarterback Trevor Knight and Heupel's offense heading into a big 2014 season.
After starting the 2014 season in the top five in both major polls, Oklahoma stumbled to an 8-5 finish. The Sooners ended the year in a direct opposite way they started it, losing to Clemson 40-6 in the Russell Athletic Bowl after being shutout through three quarters. Knight threw for 103 yards on 37 attempts with no touchdowns and three interceptions.
Now, after 14 years with the program, Heupel will not return in 2015.
The 2015 season will be a changing of the guard for Oklahoma, as co-offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach Jay Norvell will not return, either. Norvell had coached the Sooners' wideouts since 2008. Heupel deposited three separate stints under Stoops, first as a national championship-winning quarterback from 1999-2000, then as a graduate assistant in 2004, and then as quarterbacks coach in 2006 before a promotion to offensive coordinator before the 2010 season.
