With La Liga, a Spanish soccer league, coming to Boise for a FIFA sponsored event, the iconic blue turf at Boise State has officially gone from its signature blue hue, to green.
Evidently, FIFA requires any field that its teams play on be natural grass, in an effort to "protect players from injury and ensure the best playing surface," according to the Idaho Statesmen, so the blue artifical turf had to be replaced with some Kentucky Bluegrass.
For those freaking out about the condition of the Smurf Turf, rest assured it is being cared for. The company that came in with the natural grass (JB Instant Lawn) has done the same for over 20 fields for various soccer events. To preserve the artificial grass underneath, they lay down a sort of interlocking decking before rolling out the plastic tarps, reinforced black plastic, and eventually the natural grass playing surface.
In all, the company brought 1.26 million pounds of turf in on 20 semi trucks to get the job done.
Take an accelerated look at the transformation below.
