Arizona State running back Cam Skattebo was a huge reason behind the Sun Devils turnaround into a College Football Playoff team this past season.
Somehow left off the list of Heisman finalists, Skattebo rushed for 1,711 yards (4th nationally) and 21 touchdowns (6th nationally) while averaging nearly 6 yards per carry while absolutely embodying the toughness and physicality of a Kenny Dillingham program, and Marcus Arroyo led offense.
With Skatt and his special skillset of being both a punishing ball carrier with elite contact balance off to the NFL, Arroyo and the Sun Devils offensive staff are tasked with trying to replace his elite level of offensive production.
During a conversation with reporters recently, the Broyles Award finalist this past fall shed some light on just how they're doing that, and in his answer provided he unknowingly provides a unique blueprint for high school coaches faced with the same daunting task.
"In our breakdown we take a look at where the production came from and try to then break down into what is the irreplaceable piece?
Arroyo goes on to share that when we went through and looked at all the plays Skattebo had a hand in last season, he came to the realization that there's a category of plays he calls "Skatt plays," that are just special and will be extra difficult to replace.
"Those are the ones with balance and body control that were just crazy plays, that that you're just like 'that's a Skatt play.' That's just a special play."
"You have to do it that way, because then I've got to go in and think, ok, what are the plays made by the running back that we've asked him to do that recruits and guys are going to be asked to do as a running back. There's that silo of plays where we should be able to replace those plays because that's the offense and that's what we ask of the position. So you do that in both run and pass, because in the running back category, in our offense, the guy has to be an all-down back."
"So you've got to go through the pass plays and ask, 'Ok, what were the Skatt pass plays?'"
"I say that because I've got to look at it that way. I can't just go, 'There's 2,700 yards out the window.' We've got to recruit and find guys and I've got to find which piece of the puzzle I can take those categories of plays and plug those guys in."
