Coaches love mantras with meaning that everyone can rally around. They're not alone, as businesses tend to follow the same formula.
Chip Kelly's Oregon teams had "Win the Day," which dominated for a while. A few seasons ago, Steve Sarkisian's "All Gas. No Brakes" was the mantra hundreds of football teams adopted.
Charlotte brought to light an interesting new one with their video today, where strength coach Jake Miller talks to players about a "Rob the Bank" mentality.
For three seasons, Miller led the strength and conditioning efforts for Ohio under head coach Tim Albin during the 2021, 2022, and 2023 seasons.
Before the 2024 season, Miller took an opportunity to become the director of athletic performance role at UCLA, but when Albin took the Charlotte job the opportunity to reunite and rebuild the Charlotte program together was too good to pass up.
A personal fan of heist movies, Miller and the Niners have adopted a "Rob the Bank" motto as they charge toward spring ball.
In the clip, Miller breaks down why "Rob the Bank" has become their adopted mentality.
"Always be ready. That's why I love heist movies. Whatever it is, you've got to be able to adjust. You always have to be ready."
"That's what the whole 'Rob the Bank' thing is. You have to do your job the best you can do, but if you ain't paying attention, you put everyone else at risk. What is your job? We're going to rob the bank...have you done your job so well that you don't hesitate when it comes to working?"
"When the bank vault blows, do you hesitate? You can say it all you want, but if you ain't showing it, you ain't on the crew."
"We're going to test your steel tomorrow. Put your masks on. Kick that door open."
"ROB THE BANK!"
A motto or mantra are just a collection of empty words without a story and meaning behind it, and Miller does a great job laying out why ROB THE BANK is right for Charlotte in the clip.
