Coach Prime adds former NFL coordinator Byron Leftwich to Colorado staff (Colorado)

Yesterday, a blurry photo began to make its way around on social media of veteran NFL coach and former Jaguars quarterback Byron Leftwich decked out in Colorado gear at practice.

Coupled with the fact that Deion Sanders has loaded his staff with former NFL players and coaches like Pat Shurmur, Marshall Faulk, Domato Peko and Warren Sapp (among others), that photo sparked speculation that Prime was adding another veteran NFL presence to his staff.

Today, NFL insider Jordan Schultz confirmed that addition, sharing that Leftwich is returning to coaching on the staff in Boulder.

The former Tampa Bay Bucs offensive coordinator interviewed for multiple NFL opportunities this cycle, including as one of the few to interview for the head coaching job in New England.

Leftwich coordinated the Bucs offense with Tom Brady at the helm that culminated in a Super Bowl LV title, and he last called plays in 2022 with the Bucs.

A decade as a player with stops with the Jaguars, Falcons, Steelers, and Bucs led to a coaching internship with the Cardinals, and a year later he was the quarterbacks coach for the franchise. he would spent some time during the 2018 season as the interim offensive coordinator before joining Bruce Arians and the Bucs staff in 2019 as offensive coordinator.

The job with Prime at Colorado marks Leftwich's first stop in college football, and brings another NFL presence to Sanders staff in Colorado as they find their path forward coming off a 9-win season after losing both Shadeur Sanders and Travis Hunter, both of which appear to be first-round locks in the upcoming NFL Draft.
