Jim Mastro returning to coaching role (Nevada)

One of the key architects behind one of the most explosive rushing attacks in college football history is returning to the sidelines.

Jim Mastro, who spent the past few seasons in the GM role for the Nevada program, is moving to an on-field role where he will now serve as the running backs coach the program announced today.

The veteran running backs coach rejoined the Nevada staff in 2022 under Ken Wilson, and when Jeff Choate took over in December of 2023 Mastro was retained.

While Mastro spent last season in the general manager role, he spent two seasons before that in a senior director of football administration and operations role.

A full-time on-field role became available after offensive coordinator Matt Lubick accepted a job at Kansas earlier this off season, and David Gilbertson was promoted to offensive coordinator.

While he has stops around college football at Cal Poly, San Jose State, Idaho, UCLA, Washington State, and Oregon over three decades in college football, Mastro is widely regarded as a key contributor to the invention of the Pistol offense that became a staple of the Nevada offense under Chris Ault.

Mastro's 11-year tenure at Nevada is littered with impressive accomplishments, but is perhaps best known for producing the only team in FBS history to have three 1,000-yard rushers in the same season back in 2009.

Over the course of his 31 seasons in college football, Mastro has worked with the running backs in 28 of those years, winning the 2010 FootballScoop Running Backs Coach of the Year award and has been a finalist a number of times on top of that.
