One Bowling Green candidate is off the board (Mercer)

Quickly after the departure of Scot Loeffler to join the Eagles staff as quarterbacks coach, we broke the news six days ago that Mike Jacobs was a candidate for the opening at Bowling Green.

Recognizing the value of Jacobs, Mercer has worked to sign him to a contract extension and stave off the interest from the Falcons, keeping him as the leader of the Bears.

Mercer and Jacobs agreed to a new contract that will keep the reigning Southern Conference Coach of the Year under contract through the 2029 season.

Jacobs led Mercer to a 11-3 mark in his first season as head coach, won the Southern Conference and made a run to the FCS quarterfinals.

The postseason run was the furthest the program has made it since reviving the football program in 2013.

Before making the jump to the FCS ranks, the Ohio native had success at the Division II level, leading Notre Dame College (D-II - OH) to a 42-8 mark from 2016-19.

In addition to Jacobs, we shared yesterday that longtime Kentucky tight ends coach Vince Marrow and Minnesota co-defensive coordinator Nick Monroe were also among the candidates that have interviewed for the lone remaining opening in major college football.
