UT-Permian Basin is expected to hire Mike Babcock as its assistant head coach and offensive line coach, sources told FootballScoop on Tuesday.
UTPB is a Division II school located in Odessa, Texas; the Falcons are led by third-year head coach Kris McCullough, who was the youngest head coach in the nation at the time of his hire in 2022.
Babcock is intimately familiar with Division II football, having served as McKendree University's head coach from 2013-23. He went 58-52 with the Bearcats before leaving last August to become the special assistant to head coach DeShaun Foster at UCLA.
A former Bruins linebacker, Babcock coached at UCLA from 2000-04, in that time tutoring the linebackers, defensive line and offensive line. He also spent time as the offensive line coach, tight ends coach and special teams coordinator at Colorado, as the tight ends coach at the University of San Diego, and as the quarterbacks coach at Colorado State-Pueblo.
UTPB is 17-7 in two seasons under McCullough. The Falcons went 10-2 with a Lone Star Conference championship in 2023 and 7-5 with a Heritage Bowl last fall.
