Sources: Ohio State bringing in NFL assistant to help with Buckeyes secondary (Ohio State)

Taver Johnson's spent five of his past years coaching in the NFL.

Now, the Cincinnati, Ohio, native is returning to his home state and its flagship program, FootballScoop has learned.

Johnson has returned to the Buckeyes in a senior defensive analyst-type role, sources tell FootballScoop. Johnson also had been with the University of Tennessee in its secondary.

He will work with the Buckeyes's defensive backs in the secondary, where he will help co-defensive coordinator Tim Walton and Matt Guerrieri, the defensive pass game coordinator.

The trio give Ohio State arguably college football's deepest group of coaches with specialization in the defensive back-end.

Johnson returns after multiple seasons with the Las Vegas Raiders and Philadelphia Eagles, fresh off their Super Bowl LIX triumph last month.

This move actually marks Johnson's third tour de force at Ohio State; he first served on Jim Tressel's defensive staff from 2007-11.

After overpowering Notre Dame Jan. 20 to claim the first-ever 12-team College Football Playoff title, Ohio State is set to open the 2025 Aug. 30 at home against Texas.

The game is a rematch of Ohio State's double-digit win against the Longhorns in the CFP Semifinals.
