Sources: Utah Tech hiring former Nebraska, Texas Tech player to run special teams (Kyan Brumfield)

Kyan Brumfield, whose own playing career saw him begin his college tenure as part of two Patriot League championship teams at Colgate and finish after stops at a pair of Big 12 Conference programs, is poised to claim his first on-field assistant coaching role.

Sources tell FootballScoop that Brumfield, who earned Academic All-Big 12 honors during his lone season at Texas Tech, has agreed to become the new special teams coordinator for Utah Tech under second-year head coach Lance Anderson.

Brumfield, whose playing days included a season under Scott Frost at Nebraska and concluded at Florida International, also brings with him Power Conference coaching experience.

After a year working with defensive backs, defensive ends and special teams for Kalani Sitake's BYU program, Brumfield was a quality control coach this past season in the ACC on Brent Key's Georgia Tech squad.

Though the Trailblazers mustered just one win during their 2024 debut season under Anderson, it was a big one; they upset then-No. 9 Central Arkansas 34-21 at home.

Utah Tech is slated to open its 2025 campaign at home Aug. 30 against UC-Davis. The Trailblazers have four non-conference contests to get started before transitioning to United Athletic Conference play Sept. 27 on the road against Austin Peay, led by former Duke and UCLA assistant coach Jeff Faris.
