TCU announces hiring of two former Baylor Bears (Sonny Dykes)

TCU on Tuesday announced the hiring of Brian Norwood as its new assistant coach for safeties and Corey Coleman as its new assistant coach for wide receivers.

Yes, that is former Baylor defensive coordinator Brian Norwood, and former Baylor wide receiver Corey Coleman, both now working for TCU.

Both new Horned Frogs were Bears when the TCU-Baylor (or Baylor-TCU) rivalry was at its hottest. Norwood coordinated Art Briles's defenses from 2008-10 and served as assistant head coach and safeties coach from 2011-14. Coleman played a large part in keeping TCU out of the 2014 College Football Playoff by catching eight passes for 144 yards and two touchdowns in Baylor's classic 61-58 win that October. Coleman's 25-yard grab tied the game with 4:42 remaining, part of a 24-0 fourth quarter avalanche that stood as one of the best games of the 2010s and changed an entire conference

Of course, these are not the first two to switch sides in the Revivalry. Kendal Briles has been TCU's offensive coordinator since 2023, and Gary Patterson spent much of 2024 consulting for Baylor.

TCU's entire staff is filled with former rivals, in fact. The Frogs pulled Sonny Dykes away from SMU, and also recently hired former Texas Tech linebackers coach Josh Bookbinder as assistant coach for linebackers.

Norwood spent 2020-23 as assistant head coach, passing game coordinator and safeties coach at UCLA. Between Baylor and UCLA he was a co-defensive coordiantor and secondary coach at Tulsa, Kansas State and Navy.

TCU appears to be Coleman's first college coaching job. The fifteenth pick in the 2015 NFL draft, he played for the Cleveland Browns, Buffalo Bills, New England Patriots, New York Giants and Kansas City Chiefs from 2015-22, and spent 2023-24 in the UFL.
