Kevin Sumlin expected to return to college football as Big Ten co-coordinator (Kevin Sumlin)

Maryland is expected to hire Kevin Sumlin as its co-offensive coordinator and tight ends coach, according to multiple reports on Tuesday.

Sumlin, of course, is the former head coach at Houston, Texas A&M and Arizona. He went 95-63 in 12 and a half seasons at those programs, leading the Cougars to two Conference USA championship games and the Aggies to their best season since 1947. In their first season in the SEC, A&M's 2012 campaign that saw them go 11-2, defeat defending and eventual national champion Alabama, win the school's second Heisman Trophy, and post a No. 5 ranking in both polls. Sumlin recorded six winning seasons in six tries at Texas A&M.

He spent 2022 as the head coach and general manager of the USFL's Houston Gamblers. The Gamblers are expected to begin their second season later this spring.

The job will be Sumlin's first assistant coaching position since 2007, when he was the co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach at Oklahoma. He coached tight ends for the Sooners from 2003-05 before moving to wideouts.

Sumlin replaces Mike Miller, who took the offensive coordinator job at Charlotte. The Terps are also searching for a new offensive coordinator after Dan Enos took the same job at Arkansas. It's unclear at this time who Mike Locksley will tab as the other co-coordinator; Maryland is also in search of a quarterbacks coach at this time.

Maryland is looking to build on a successful 2022 campaign that saw the club go 8-5 and defeat No. 23 NC State in the Duke's Mayo Bowl.
