Mercer hires one of top Division II head coaches in Mike Jacobs (division ii)

Mike Jacobs, one of the top coaches from the Division II level over the past decade, is taking over the Mercer (FCS - GA) program.

Mercer announced the hire this morning.

In two coaching stops at Notre Dame College (D-II - OH) and Lenoir-Rhyne (D-II - NC), Jacobs has compiled an impressive 74-17 record. The 81% win percentage is good for sixth-best win percentage among active Division II head coaches.

This past fall, Jacobs led Lenoir-Rhyne to a 13-2 mark and a playoff run that ended in the Division II semifinals.

He left Notre Dame College after a stellar four-year run where they went 42-8 and won a pair of Mountain East titles, leading to the program to their first postseason berth in 2018, leading the team to the quarterfinals a year later during a 12-2 run.

Sources tell FootballScoop that Jacobs had been a strong contender to replace Tre Lamb at Gardner-Webb (FCS - NC) and also had garnered traction in the search at the University of West Georgia (FCS).

Mercer became in the market for a new head coach following the departure of Drew Cronic to take over the offensive coordinator job at Navy.

Cronic led Mercer to a 32-9 mark over the last four seasons, winning the South Atlantic Conference title last fall.
