New LSU defensive line coach nearly doubles salary in move from South Carolina (LSU)

LSU didn't just pay big in December 2021 to snare Brian Kelly away from Notre Dame.

The Tigers have continued to pay top-dollar for the coaches on Kelly's football staff as well.

That's exactly the case for new LSU defensive line coach Jimmy Lindsey, hired away from fellow Southeastern Conference foe South Carolina over the weekend.

As LSU beat reporter Wilson Alexander first reported, Lindsey has agreed to a two-year term worth approximately $1.5 million in joining Kelly's LSU staff.

Per Lindsey's contract, which Alexander obtained via an Freedom of Information open records request, Lindsey also saw his new employer cover the $300,000 buyout-fee from Lindsey's recently renegotiated deal with Shane Beamer and South Carolina.

Contract documents obtained by FootballScoop in January reflected that Lindsey had been one of five Gamecocks' assistants to receive both an increase in compensation and an extension to the term of his deal.

Because Lindsey had signed the new pact at South Carolina, he owed the Gamecocks $300,000; the figure would have dipped to $200,000 had Lindsey remained on staff through the coming season.

But his new two-year deal at LSU, when factoring in the $300,000 buyout-payment from the Tigers, is worth the same amount that Lindsey would have earned the next four seasons at LSU, per the terms of the January contract that he had signed.

In his first season on the Bayou, Kelly had an assistant coaching staff that earned more than $8 million, in addition to the $9-million-plus salary that Kelly had commanded upon his arrival.

LSU, a surprising 10-game winner in 2022, opens its 2023 season at Florida State Sept. 3.
