AFCA proposing moving to single transfer window in January (transfer portal)

In a unanimous vote, FBS head coaches at the annual AFCA meeting in Charlotte on Tuesday voted to eliminate the December and April transfer portal windows in favor of one 10-day window in January, AFCA executive director Craig Bohl announced.

The window would take place from Jan. 2-12. The spring window would then exist only for graduate transfers.

In a corresponding change, the AFCA would like to change December from a quiet period to a dead period in recruiting.

Left unaddressed, but it remains to be seen if the AFCA would then recommend moving the December signing period back into the third weekend of the month, where it existed until this season. The early signing period was moved to the week of FBS conference championship games to get it done ahead of the December portal window, which opened the Monday after conference title games.

The AFCA will now take the recommendation of its membership to the NCAA Football Oversight Committee, which has the power to enact such changes. Chaired by Buffalo AD Mark Alnutt, the Football Oversight Committee is a 15-person panel populated primarily by athletics directors. Illinois head coach Bret Bielema is the AFCA's representative on the committee, where he is one of 13 voting members. Bohl is also on the committee, but he and College Football Playoff executive director Rich Clark are non-voting members.

The NCAA Convention began today in Nashville, but the FOC is next scheduled to meet via teleconference on Jan. 30 and in person from Feb. 10-11 at NCAA headquarters in Indianapolis.
