Florida State set to hire Nebraska defensive coordinator Tony White (Tony White)

Nebraska defensive coordinator Tony White is expected to take the same job at Florida State, Warchant reported Monday.

White was in his second season leading the Huskers' defense as part of a charter member of Matt Rhule's staff in Lincoln.

The hire is another major move as Mike Norvell re-makes his Florida State staff following the Seminoles' nightmare 2-10 season. Norvell hired UCF head coach Gus Malzahn to be his offensive coordinator over the weekend.

Unlike Malzahn, Norvell has never worked with White previously. A former UCLA and CFL linebacker, White entered college coaching at his alma mater in 2007 and worked exclusively out west before landing the Syracuse defensive coordinator job in 2020. He was also Arizona State's defensive coordinator in 2019.

Nebraska ranks 19th nationally at 19.8 points allowed per game. Florida State finished 87th at an even 28 allowed per contest.

For Nebraska, the move means Rhule will have to replace both coordinators entering a pivotal third season. Rhule already demoted Marcus Satterfield from his offensive coordinator post and gave the job to Dana Holgorsen just a week after hiring him in November as an offensive consultant.
