After losing 48-27 to UTSA last night, North Texas has decided to make a change at defensive coordinator.
Matt Caponi, who joined the staff in December of 2022, has been let go.
Before arriving on staff in Denton, Caponi spent four seasons working with the corners in the Big 12 at Iowa State, where he reunited with Matt Campbell after the two former Mount Union (D-III - OH) grads previously coached together with the Purple Raiders.
Caponi also previously worked with the defensive backs at West Virginia and as a graduate assistant at both Arizona and Pitt.
His only previous defensive coordinator experience prior to taking the Mean Green job was a three-season stint at William & Jefferson (D-III - VA).
The loss Friday night dropped UNT to 5-5 on the year, fighting for one more win to reach bowl eligibility. They wrap up their season with a home game against ECU and a trip to Temple to close out the year
Caponi becomes the fourth defensive coordinator change of the cycle, joining Florida State, UCF, and West Virginia. Keep track of all defensive coordinator changes via our FBS DC Tracking page.
Veteran defensive assistant Brian Odom, in his first season in Denton after previously working on the defensive side of the ball at USC and Oklahoma, is taking over as interim defensive coordinator.
