Per sources, interim head coach Chad Lunsford will be named the next head coach of the Georgia Southern program.
Lunsford started working with wide receivers in Statesboro in 2013, then transitioned to tight ends and recruiting coordinator the next two years, adding special teams coordinator duties in 2016. in 2017, he was promoted again and given the title of assistant head coach.
Lunsford took over a winless team and provided immediate energy and leadership, leading them to an impressive 52-0 win over South Alabama, and then a win over Mark Hudspeth and Louisiana-Lafayette as well in their final two games.
He also provided one of the press conference quotes of the year with "put your foot on their throat, choke 'em out."
In Lunsford, Georgia Southern is getting a quality coach that went out there and proved it on the field, and a great guy that cares deeply about the program, the kids on the roster, and the campus community. Most importantly, he's clearly got the kids bought into the new vision and direction of the program under his leadership, and that's why they were ultimately able to go out there and win two big games under him.
That momentum should be great for the program moving forward.
Lunsford takes over for Tyson Summers, who went 5-13 in just under two seasons.
