Utah State hires veteran defensive coordinator Joe Cauthen (Blake Anderson)

Utah State has hired veteran defensive coordinator Joe Cauthen, the program announced Friday.

Cauthen replaces Ephraim Banda, who took a job with the Cleveland Browns after coordinating the Aggies' defense for the past two seasons.

Utah State will be Cauthen's seven defensive coordinator job, dating back to his first such post at Texas A&M-Commerce in 1999. Stops in between include Valdosta State, Arkansas State, Houston, Buffalo, and Stephen F. Austin, where he coached in 2022. Cauthen was Blake Anderson's defensive coordinator for the first five of his seven seasons at A-State.

With Cauthen on staff, Anderson's Red Wolves teams won two Sun Belt titles, reach five bowl games, and post a 39-25 record.

Cauthen played at Stephen F. Austin and started coaching in 1990 at Sherman (Texas) High School.

Anderson also has to replace his offensive coordinator after Anthony Tucker took a co-coordinator job at Indiana.

The Aggies are looking to build on a 6-7 season in 2022.
