Tulane expected to fill defensive coordinator opening with Shiel Wood

Sources confirm to FootballScoop that Tulane is expected to fill their defensive coordinator opening with Troy defensive coordinator Shiel Wood.

The hire is being reported by multiple outlets this morning as well.

This past season was Wood's first as defensive coordinator at Troy, where the Trojans fielded one of the stingiest defenses in college football.

Wood's squad finished the season ranked 8th nationally in points allowed.

Before joining Jon Sumrall's staff at Troy, Wood served as the co-defensive coordinator at Army, where he worked with the linebackers in 2020 before moving to safeties for the 2021 season.

Tulane lost defensive coordinator Chris Hampton to Oregon back in mid-January. Fritz initially targeted and hired Marshall defensive coordinator Lance Guidry for the vacancy, but Mario Cristobal and Miami swooped in and hired shortly thereafter.

The opening at Troy will mark the 39th defensive coordinator opening at the FBS level this off season. Keep track of all defensive coordinator hires and openings via this page.
