It's hard to imagine a team that has had a better off season that Joey McGuire's program at Texas Tech.
First off, after losing offensive coordinator Zach Kittley to become the head coach at FAU, they landed arguably the hottest young offensive coordinator in college football in Texas State's Mack Leftwich. Then, on defense they decided to part ways with defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter and brought in Houston defensive coordinator Shiel Wood, who has successful coordinator experience at Wofford, Army, Troy and Tulane.
Earlier this off season we profiled Notre Dame's pursuit of GM James Blanchard, who the Red Raiders were ultimately able to hold on to, and he had a huge part in the program's gram also swung big in the transfer portal, investing over $10 million that helped them land the number 2 ranked portal class in college football.
They also recently put the finishing touches on what may just be the most impressive facility in all of college football that cost a whopping $250 million.
Coming off a second 8-5 finish in his three seasons in charge, McGuire had a recent discussion with Andy & Ari of On3 where he was asked about his rules for life.
After being enlightened with some answers from previous guests of the show, McGuire shared the first one off the top of his head, and it pertained to food.
"Well this is number one, if they have biscuits and gravy on the menu, I'm ordering it. I don't care what time of day it is. If a restaurant has biscuits and gravy on the menu, I'm going to order biscuits and gravy."
I'm not sure if sharing that is a calculated move to get homemade biscuits and gravy when doing home visits with players, but if it is, it's absolutely brilliant.
That rule was followed by the McGuire sharing wisdom that when his feet hit the ground, he has the choice to have a good day. There might be bad moments in the day, but he's committed to not letting that become a bad day because he feels strongly that his players need a consistent version of him to be at their best.
