Sherrone Moore completes first Michigan staff with Group of 5 coordinator (LaMar Morgan)

Michigan is set to hire Louisiana defensive coordinator LaMar Morgan as its defensive backs coach, according to multiple reports on Friday.

The move comes after Sherrone Moore's first option to fill the secondary, Houston Texans defensive backs coach Stephen Adegoke, opted to remain in Houston, as FootballScoop first reported on Thursday

Morgan spent the past two seasons as the Ragin' Cajuns' defensive coordinator and safeties coach. He previously coached defensive backs at Vanderbilt (where he helped the 'Dores leap from two interceptions to 13 in one season), Houston, ULM and Western Carolina.

While the defending national champions have been extraordinarily decimated by graduation and NFL attrition, Morgan will have a relatively-intact defensive backfield with which to work. Cornerbacks Josh Wallace and Will Johnson, free safety Rod Moore and strong safety Makari Paige are all set to return in 2024; Johnson is regarded as one of the top defenders in college football.

Morgan is the second FBS coordinator Moore hired to a position job in Ann Arbor. UMass offensive coordinator Steve Casula will coach tight ends for the Wolverines.

Casula is the only new hire on Moore's offensive staff, while the defensive staff is entirely new (or, in the case of linebackers coach Brian Jean-Mary, returning) to Michigan.
