Colorado School of Mines head coach Pete Sterbick is expected to become the next offensive coordinator at Montana State, sources told FootballScoop on Tuesday.
Under head coach Brent Vigen, Montana State was undefeated until falling 35-32 to North Dakota State in the FCS National Championship on Jan. 6. Montana State is 47-10 with two FCS runner-up finishes and three semifinal trips in four seasons under Vigen.
That success prompted offensive coordinator Tyler Walker to win the FootballScoop FCS Coordinator of the Year award and land the offensive coordinator job at Temple.
In losing one FootballScoop Coordinator of the Year, Vigen is expected to place him with another. Sterbick was chosen by prior winners as the FootballScoop Division II Coordinator of the Year in 2022 for a season that saw the Orediggers lead the nation in scoring (44.6 points per game) and passing efficiency (175.94).
Sterbick was promoted to Mines's head coach in 2023 and immediately led the Orediggers to a season in which their only loss came in the D2 national title game. Colorado School of Mines averaged 508.5 yards and 46.5 points per game that season. This past season, the Orediggers went 8-3 while scoring 37.7 points a game.
Prior to coming to Colorado in 2019, Sterbick spent 2014-18 as Montana Tech's offensive coordinator, quarterbacks coach and running backs coach. He has also coordinated the offense at Grand View University and spent 2012-13 as the head coach at McPherson College.
